=========== CXrL SHADOW 2.3.2 Windows'95/NT Installation Guide ============ >> TOC: REQUIREMENTS PREINSTALLATION GETTING BINARIES CONFIGURATION CONTACT MAILING LIST >> REQUIREMENTS: RAM - at least 32 MB DISK - at least 30 MB free OS - Win'95/98 or NT 4.0, NT preferred. MISC. - Optionally, Cygwin B20.1 for additional Unix style commands. This is a free package available from Cygnus that provides Unix like environment for Win32. >> PREINSTALLATION NOTES: This section is only applicable if you have SHADOW version 2.3.0 installed on your Windows machine. The problem is that version 2.3.0, which was the first public release, relied on PATH and other DOS variables to setup the SHADOW run-time environment. Starting from SHADOW v2.3.1, the previous released version, SHADOW uses Windows Registry, which the installation automatically creates and then deletes when you de-install SHADOW. If you don't have 2.3.0 installed, simply skip to the next section. You must remove the SHADOW v2.3.0 definitions before installing version 2.3.1. This should not be necessary in the future. If you used the SHVARS.BAT file to setup the PATH and DOS environment variables in the 2.3.0 release, please delete (or put REM before it) from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you explicitly included the definitions in your AUTOEXEC.BAT, please delete all (or REM these out). The variables are: PATH -- make sure previous version is not in your path. SHADOW_ROOT, TCL_LIBRARY, TK_LIBRARY, TIX_LIBRARY, and BLT_LIBRARY -- These are not needed in v2.3.1 anymore. If you're running Windows'95, you should reboot before proceeding. >> GETTING BINARIES: 1. Get the following from the Web/ftp server at CXrL: - shadow-2.3.2-win32.exe -- binary distribution for Win'95/98/NT 2. Run the shadow-2.3.2-win32.EXE program and click on SETUP. SETUP will take you through the installation process step-by-step. The default installation parameters are: Destination Directory : C:\Program Files\SHADOW v2.3.2 Programs Group : SHADOW v2.3.2 These are all configurable, but taking the defaults may be the easiest way. Also, please be careful if you choose "Custom" in the installation type; using "Typical" is your safest bet for a working setup. 4. What does SETUP.EXE do? - Installs the files in the archive to (what you chose during the SETUP dialog) - Adds the following Windows Registry entry that SHADOW uses at runtime to figure out where it's installed on your machine: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CXrL\SHADOW\v2.3.2 Symbol : SHADOW_ROOT Value : ( is where you installed SHADOW) - Sets up the icons for you to run SHADOW programs with. Under Windows'95/98/NT, it sets up a Program Group ("SHADOW v2.3.2" by default) that you can access by clicking on the "Start" on your taskbar, and then choose Programs and you'll see SHADOW group. - Reboots the machine if you so choose (recommended on Windows 95/98). The installation tree looks like the following: Assuming you chose "C:\Program Files\SHADOW v2.3.2" as the destination folder, the tree would then look like the following: C: Programs Files SHADOW v2.3.2 BIN DATA DOC EXAMPLES LIB SHADOW BITMAPS TCL8.0 TK8.0 TIX4.1 BITMAPS PREF BLT2.4 DD_PROTOCOLS >> CONFIGURATION: None. You don't have to add the SHADOW binary directory to your PATH to access the programs from DOS. Simply open DOS Shell from the GUI using "Tools | New Shell Window" and you'll get a DOS window with the correct PATH settings so you can just say "plotxy" for example. If you get "Out of environment errors" when running text mode programs with DOS Window, then you need to add the following line in your CONFIG.SYS and reboot: SHELL=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\COMMAND.COM /E:1500 /P You might need to adjust the 1500 value above upwards until it works. You can send your complaints to Microsoft (no address or ZIP required ;-). If you're familiar and/or comfortable with Unix, SHADOW now comes with a small part of Cygwin (beta 20.1), such as the Bourne shell clone (bash), ls, etc. If you install Cygwin from http://sourceware.cygnus.com/cygwin/, SHADOW GUI will detect that use the tools. However, SHADOW comes with a newer version of cygwin1.dll, and you need to copy that into Cygwin binary directory (it's ok to this, trust me). To start new Unix shell with SHADOW environment already initialized, you can use the "Unix Shell" option from Start Menu or GUI Tools menu. When running SHADOW, I suggest you change your working directory to outside the SHADOW installation area (C:\Program Files\SHADOW v2.3.2), so that you don't write files in the installation area. >> CONTACT: For more information on SHADOW, please contact Mumit Khan at +1 608 265 6075 or Franco Cerrina at +1 608 263 4955 .
