Scripting languages

• Very useful for prototyping, sequencing scans and doing changes on-the-fly

• Not useful for doing fast data acquisition neither for writing large programs

• Putting too much knowledge into scripts causes problems

• ESRF uses SPEC heavily – over 70 000 lines of macros

• Use scripting languages with moderation
